Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

An AMAZING place.
An AMAZING place. So compact and easy to get around, very historic, take a river cruise and dont miss out on the FREE railway museum, well worth a visit. Possibly stay away from the river area for food and drinks, they appear to be much higher priced. Great shops, The Shambles is a wonderful story of how York used to be. The cat walk/track and visit all the old pubs off the beaten track down the little alleyways.. York Minster a MUST..

We really enjoyed York.
We really enjoyed York. Everything seemed like walking distance so managed to see everything we had an interest in.
Steeped in history and culture there is something for everyone here from those interested in architecture to foodies.
I would recommend York Minster, the Shambles (and food market - so many great choices), walking the wall (that surrounds the city) and Betty's Team Rooms.

One of the UK's most historic and accessible cities.
One of the UK's most historic and accessible cities. Everything you would find in London but cheaper and more 'human sized'. In Spring it is just busy enough to have a buzz but not crazy. Fabulous architecture, a river in the city, outstanding hotels and restaurants and jolly street theatre. A must see.
Stayed in Galtres Lodge - superb and more or less next door to Minster. Ate in hotel, Lucias and the famous Yak and Yeti. All brilliant.
A walkable city and easy to reach by train from anywhere in UK but importantly is on the main East Coast line between Kings Cross and Aberdeen. A good stop off if you are covering England and Scotland.
The hotel was lovely we went for my daughters hen party there was 14 of us. The hotel was situated in a lovely area of York a short taxi ride into the city centre. The pub next door the grey mare was very helpful with taxi numbers and where to go while we were staying there. Only 1 complaint there wasn’t enough bedding the sofa bed didn’t have a duvet and when one of the girls rang they said they couldn’t bring one until the office opened on Monday and we we’re checking out on the Sunday.
My husband and I have just enjoyed a wonderful few days in York on our honeymoon and had the pleasure of staying the Du Vin Hotel. From start to finish our stay has been fabulous and genuinely the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff are all so professional and pleasant and can’t do enough for you. Everything you wish for in a hotel, you get here on a 5 star level. They did a lovely job of making our stay extra special for our honeymoon too 💕
The hotel is situated in a leafy suburb, a 15 minute walk from the center of York, plenty to see and do, lots of restaurants (make sure you book before hand ) , book online for York Minster or you won't get in. The room and beds are comfortable, bathroom nice and clean, plenty of hot water. A very good Breakfast which you pre order for the time of your stay, which can be adjusted. A bar is available, but shuts at 21.45.
A nice, unassuming guest house with simple accommodations. The rooms are small but use the space well. The bathroom is tiny but again, this is a guest house and not a four-star hotel. The owner is very friendly and helpful, and for five pounds prepares a wonderful breakfast of a ham sandwich and coffee. The ham (bacon) is fresh from a local butcher. Located 10 minutes by foot from the Minster and central York.
Not a hotel as much as an airbnb type place but that was totally fine. Accessed my room key by a lockbox on the entry door, super easy. Awesome location just a stones throw from one of the city’s famous gates, leading to a pedestrian street bringing you straight to the Minster. My room was small but cozy and exactly what I wanted for a couple days in York. Lots of restaurants everywhere.
Nice accommodation option with a comfortable bed, not far away from the city center. Good value for money. There is no 24 h reception desk, but nonetheless I was able to communicate with the hosts easily and drop off and pick up my suitcase when needed. There was complimentary coffee and tea in the room, which was very nice (this seems to be common in England according to my experience).
Room: Received an upgrade! Comfortable, clean and not noisy,
Location: Beside the Clifford Tower. Easy walking distance to most of the York attractions.
Breakfast: Full selection available including, full English, cold meats and cheese, scones, muffins etc.
Parking: Valet parking is available on site. There is also a Pay and Display public site opposite the hotel.
The Moxy is extremely well situated for the city centre, with great bars and restaurants near by and several convenience stores for obligatory hotel snacks. The room was clean, modern and comfortable and we loved our stay! The staff were also super friendly and helpful, providing lots of local knowledge which really appreciated as first time York visitors.
The staff went above and beyond for me. I've got health conditions and they let me in my room early when I explained and they really looked out for me. They're a credit to the business. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone and I'll definitely use this hotel if I'm back in York. The room was really nice too and comfortable.
We are on a self-drive Holiday in England. This apartment comes with free parking.
The apartment is big and clean.
Supermarkets, grocery shops, petrol kiosk and restaurants are close-by. Also within walking distance to York old town.
Very well situated for York Railway Station and a short walk into the City Centre. Nice modern hotel with good sized bedroom and walk in shower. Ideal for a short stay either business or leisure. Breakfast plentiful and well organised.
Ideally located for the City Centre and York races, this lovely hotel reminds me of stays as a child as though sone of the decor is dated it's very clean and the staff are very friendly it's also excellent value for money too.
We had a very comfortable room at the front of the hotel looking out to York Minster. Breakfast was served in a very pleasant dining area with a very good selection of food served by very helpful staff.
Centrally located in York city centre. Not far from the train station. The hotel had ample parking also if you need it. The hotel room was large, well laid out and comfortable. Great breakfast also.
Better than expected for a Budget hotel just 3 miles away from York. Breakfast was good and staff very friendly. Pub next door and carvery which was average. Good parking and room was good.
Great location just outside York City Centre. Value for money. Great breakfast. Clean room. Excellent staff and customer service honestly best staff I’ve seen at a hotel for a long time.
The location was why I choose the hotel. Near to York and our destination at Castle Howard the following day. Nice clean and modern hotel with a lovely clean bathroom and comfy bed
The hotel does what you would expect from a chain. The parking isn't too expensive for York city centre and is really handy for those that need to travel by car.
